BIUK Research Team

Brain Infections UK is a group of new clinical research studies aiming to improve our understanding of potentially debilitating infections that can affect the brain such as encephalitis, meningitis and HIV. These conditions have a tremendous impact on the quality of life of large numbers of people in UK, but until now there has been little research done in this area.

The studies cover brain infections in both adults and children and bring together leading experts with a range of specialisms including neurology, infectious diseases, acute and emergency medicine, medical microbiology and virology. All of the conditions being studied are neurological infectious diseases which are on the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) portfolio and have Comprehensive Local Research Network (CLRN) support.

The studies are supported by a number of organisations including the NIHR, the Meningitis Research Foundation, The Encephalitis Society, Guarantors of Britain and the British HIV Association.

The Brain Infections UK team is spread across the UK, with headquarters at the University of Liverpool’s Institute for Infection and Global Health. To find out more about the different places and people involved visit our studies page.
