Meningitis North West
This is a prospective observational study in the North of England. We will recruit adult patients (over 16 years of age) who are admitted to hospital with suspected meningitis. We will review the demographics of all the patients –comparing those with viral aetiology with those with bacterial and indeed those who do not have meningitis on lumbar puncture. We will also compare between the different viruses, looking at how much the herpes viruses contribute to the overall incidence.
Over the next year we will follow up all the patients with regard to quality of life, health economics and neuropsychological outcome.
The outcomes include:
- the incidence of viral meningitis in the North West and how much herpes viruses contribute to this.
- A prospective evaluation of a tool to predict viral meningitis Vs bacterial meningitis.
- Longer term data on economic, quality of life and neuropsychological outcomes.
